Cheeky Science: What House Music Does to Your Brain

A recent Reel of me DJing seems to have struck a chord, and it has got me thinking about something much bigger than music. When I talk about nourishing the brain, body and nervous system, food is only part of the story. Music, movement, connection, creativity, rest and play all belong in that conversation too. What supports us will change with context, mood and capacity, which is why I keep coming back to three ideas in my work: curiosity, capacity and kindness.

So I dug out a house mix I made earlier in the year and found myself hearing it a little differently, thinking about how there’s something about a good beat that makes the body move before the brain even catches up. That’s what I wanted to explore when I put together Cheeky, a house music mix that’s equal parts groove and neuroscience experiment. Because we talk about music as “therapy,” but what happens when we simply listen

No guided session, no clinical intervention, just you, your nervous system, and a bassline sitting comfortably around 120 beats per minute?

 

The science of the beat

Listening to music engages almost every major neural network, from auditory areas and motor circuits to reward pathways that release dopamine. Even without lyrics or melody, rhythm alone can synchronise oscillations in regions linked to attention, movement, and emotional regulation.

Systematic reviews consistently show that music listening reduces stress, anxiety, and even blood pressure, while supporting sleep, mood and memory across different groups of people. And although most studies focus on older adults and those with a diagnosed clinical condition, more recent evidence suggests benefits extend to mid-life too, even for those of us who just like a cheeky bit of house.

What I find interesting here is that something can be good for us without feeling remotely like a health intervention. And that’s exactly what happens when we tune into the music we love… Support arrives effortlessly through pleasure, rhythm, movement, and connection because our nervous systems do not live in laboratories. They live with us.

The tempo matters

House music typically lives between 115 and 130 bpm, which is cute because it almost mirrors our heart rate during light movement. This tempo range has been linked with increased wellbeing, positive mood and motivation. Faster beats activate motor networks and reward circuitry. Slower ones soothe. House sits right at that sweet spot, energising without tipping into overwhelm.

Dancing, even in your mind

Of course, the movement part adds another layer. Research on dance and rhythmic movement shows how closely auditory, sensory and motor systems work together. Even imagining movement while listening to rhythm can recruit some of the networks involved in actually moving. So that sassy rhythm is doing more than giving you an urge to dance. Your brain is continually integrating what you hear with what your body is preparing to do.

That’s why I call Cheeky a mixtape for rewilding your nervous system. And no, this isn’t a “productivity hack”. I’m still thoroughly over those brain-performance miracle cures. For me, this is much more about curiosity: noticing what happens when you give your brain rhythm, movement and pleasure. It is also about capacity. Some days you might want to dance around the kitchen. On others, putting your headphones on and listening to one track may be plenty. Kindness means neither version needs judging.

A playful prescription

I wouldn’t claim that listening to house music slows ageing, although headlines occasionally get rather enthusiastic about this sort of thing. What I can say is that music can shift how we feel, move and connect with ourselves and other people.

So if you’re stuck in your head and you have the capacity for it, try a sonic reset. Put on something you love, turning it up enough to feel the rhythm. Move if your body wants to move, or stay still if it doesn’t. No pressure…

Because health is made from more than one ingredient. Food matters enormously to me, but so do music, movement, sleep, nature, creativity, connection and the moments that make us feel properly alive. So, perhaps nourishment is a bigger word than we thought. And that’s neuroscience too. Just a cheekier kind.
