Lots of people talk about ADHD.

Some are scientists. Some are clinicians. Others have lived experience of ADHD, so they understand the unique challenges and experiences that come with this neurotype.

I am all of the above.

In this video, I take you through the content I share with you on my “Thrive With ADHD“ course.

Hello, I’m Dr Miguel, a clinical neuroscientist and applied microbiologist with 20 years of experience in the research and clinical practice of nutrition. My work, featured in the British Medical Journal (BMJ Open), explores the natural management of ADHD, a topic close to my heart and mind. I was diagnosed with ADHD as I was writing the thesis for my doctoral degree on the subject of the gut microbiome and mental health, a project for which I received the prestigious Santander Universities Work-Based Learning Award in 2016. Like a missing puzzle piece, my diagnosis brought clarity to the unique way my mind works. This discovery came alongside another profound understanding of myself, a later diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Throughout my life, I've navigated the tapestry of challenges that arise in a society largely designed by neurotypical people for neurotypical people. As a neurodivergent person, I've encountered hurdles and embraced the complex layers of living with anxiety and the sequelae of childhood trauma from a very young age. These experiences have not only deepened my empathy but also sharpened my resolve to bridge the gap between lived experience and scientific understanding, advocating for a world that celebrates and supports all forms of neurodiversity. And that’s why I’ve written “Thrive with ADHD” as a course and as an upcoming book with Jessica Kingsley Publishers/Hachette Books.

If you have ADHD, you might feel broken. I have been there, and I know how it feels. But you are whole and complete as you are, and your intricate wealth of traits and experiences makes you the person you are. You don’t need “fixing,” but you may encounter a distinct array of challenges in your life. With my blend of academic background, research, clinical practice, and, crucially, personal lived experience, I am uniquely qualified to offer support and guidance on this shared journey. Let me help you navigate these challenges and harness our collective insights to foster a life of fulfilment and empowerment. Let me help you thrive with ADHD.

WHAT ADHDers ON THE COURSE SAY ABOUT IT

  • Lucy, Buckinghamshire

After getting my diagnosis a few months ago, I threw myself into learning as much as possible about ADHD, and discovered that there’s a whole internet of ADHD content out there. But this course is far above and beyond anything else I’ve ever come across! It will give you a wealth of knowledge about ADHD and neurodiversity alongside tools, strategies and practices that you can implement to support and manage your ADHD.

One of the biggest benefits is that Dr. Miguel takes a truly holistic approach which encompasses all aspects of nurturing your mind, body and soul. Yes, you’ll learn in fascinating, in-depth detail about the neurobiology of the ADHD brain and how it works, how to support the gut-brain axis via nutrition, and how practices such as intermittent fasting and exercise can support the management of ADHD. But you’ll also learn much, much more - such as how to improve emotional regulation, how to develop practices of self-care and self-compassion, and how to improve resilience to better cope with life’s challenges. And that’s still only scratching the surface!

What I love most is how Dr. Miguel shines a light on ADHD through a neuroaffirmative lens, reframing it from a disorder to a unique neurotype, and recognising the power and potential of all those who have ADHD. Through his holistic approach, the course illuminates a pathway to empowerment, which each individual can adapt and tailor for themselves. It’s helped me to emotionally process my diagnosis and to understand my own, unique lived experience of ADHD - and empowered me to develop personalised strategies to help me thrive in the process. This course is genuinely the best thing I’ve done for myself since my diagnosis, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!

  • Joanna, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

I highly recommend this course by Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas that comes at ADHD from every angle. My adult son is diagnosed ADHD and so I have consumed a great deal of advice on the subject to date to try and help him.

There is so much more to this course than anything I have found before. There are very clear videos covering each topic, printable course notes and an enormous volume of tools which are invaluable in many different areas.

There is so much fascinating and helpful content. Where there is advice that I have seen before ie journaling - there are so many helpful tips on how to really benefit from it, how to approach it and why it is helpful and worthwhile doing. There is no doubt in my mind that anyone with ADHD would benefit and be helped by this course and I highly recommend and encourage you to try it.

  • Daniel, London

I am undiagnosed and have been waiting to decide whether to go for an assessment or not. Miguel explains the science in such an accessible way. He’s kind and patient with questions too and delivers the content in such a unique, professional and creative way.

I really love it. I’m three modules in and I already have had more answers to my questions than I have had by doing my own research for years.

Definitely recommend signing up. It’s been the best decision I’ve made in 2024 so far.

  • Anne, Lincolnshire

The course and the tools in it are of outstanding quality. It is far beyond what I was anticipating, so I am pretty mind-blown! I absolutely love the neuroscience applied to emotional regulation, which is a biggie for me, and the way that this is woven into lessons. Dr Miguel’s take on mind-body techniques in each module is also pretty cool. So much material, but so beautifully presented and pre-digested, so it’s a pleasure to learn.

I’ve been following Miguel for a while and was expecting something good, but I am thrilled with it beyond what I can express here.

  • Alex, Cambridgeshire

I just got my diagnosis and I’m finding the course super helpful. Stunning materials, videos, and fantastic delivery by Dr Miguel. Not your same old, same old about ADHD at all! And having access to Dr Miguel on tap through each module is just remarkable. He answers questions in a few minutes!

So thrilled I signed up. I can’t recommend this course enough. Simply amazing.

  • Sally, Somerset

I wanted to give a shout-out to Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas having just completed his seven-module course – Thrive with ADHD.

I am a Psychotherapist and Coach and work with neurodivergent clients, many of whom are, or think they are, ADHD. Miguel appeared as a guest on my Neurodivergence & Mental Health Podcast. He shared many of his own life experiences and struggles spending most of his life not knowing that he is wired differently. Many of us believe that we are mentally ill or dysfunctional. We gaslight ourselves and other people make us feel “wrong.”

Miguel has a doctorate in Clinical Neuroscience. He knows his stuff and so much of his work is evidence-based so for me, taking this course has been justified to learn all about how we can thrive and feel better. Thrive with ADHD, the Course, covers a whole range of topics from diet, the gut/brain axis, and cognitive function and I learned a lot about how our brains function and which foods, supplements and activities directly impact our health.

We covered sleep for ADHDers, hydration, connection, spirituality, meditation, mindfulness, journaling, getting out in nature, rest and accepting ourselves for who we are. It's so good to find refreshing resources that get away from the deficit model. I have a particular interest in the connection between the mind and the body and how our mental health affects are brain and physical health. Miguel gave us many examples of research led information to show how we can make small changes to our lifestyle in order to thrive.

Some of us take ADHD medications and SSRIs. Some of us prefer a more natural approach. Both are completely valid. I enjoy cooking and preparing healthy meals so wanted to explore all the different foods that are beneficial. ‘Eating the Rainbow’ and tracing foods back to the farm was very insightful.

Miguel presents the course in an easy to understand format. He has produced an abundance of downloadable resources and graphics and his way of presenting is clear and engaging. Just leaves me to say that I highly recommend this course. If you like neuroscience, gut and brain health and want to know about ADHD then this is the course for you!

  • Hazel, North Devon

My interest in brain health comes from lifelong anxiety, which worsened in menopause.

I was drawn to the Thrive with ADHD course because of the combination of science and lived experience. I was delighted to learn so many juicy nuggets about how the brain works and how to support it, and had many "aha" moments.

I now have a routine which suits me and feel more at peace with myself.

    Thank you Miguel!

  • You’ll learn about the circuitry or “wiring” that connects each of the parts of the brain with one another. Every one of these cables or “pathways” runs on different neurotransmitters. Learning about these pathways will explain why you experience life events the way you do and confirm that your ADHD brain is perfect in its own way.

  • Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to reorganise itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. This adaptability allows the brain to compensate for injury and disease and adjust its activities in response to new situations or changes in the environment. Thanks to neuroplasticity, the ADHD brain can develop greater focus, improve organisational skills, and enhance impulse control.

Module 3

  • Module 3 will take you on a journey through the realms of nutrition, brain health, and mindful eating as they relate to ADHD. You will uncover the critical role of food choices in managing ADHD symptoms, learning about the benefits of specific nutrients like omega-3s, proteins, and complex carbohydrates. You’ll explore the impact of certain foods on ADHD and the science behind food choices, providing you with practical knowledge to make informed decisions about your diet. This comprehensive module isn't just about food; it's a holistic approach to understanding and managing ADHD with wisdom and insight.

You will discover how this bidirectional communication pathway plays a pivotal role in ADHD, influencing everything from mood to cognitive function. You'll delve into the science of probiotics and prebiotics and how they shape our mental health. By the end of this lesson, you won’t just grasp the concepts; you'll appreciate the profound connection between your gut health and your brain and how nurturing this relationship can help you thrive with ADHD.

  • Module 3 is goes beyond what you already learned about cognitive reframing in Module 1, and applies it to the practice of mindful eating in the context of ADHD. You'll learn to apply mindfulness to your eating habits, understanding how our relationship with food impacts ADHD symptoms. You'll also be introduced to “Mindful Eating”, a powerful cognitive reframing technique that empowers you to manage emotional eating. dietary habits. This isn’t just about changing what you eat; it’s about changing how you think about food, leading to a more balanced, healthy, and mindful approach to eating and living with ADHD.

Module 4

  • In Module 4, you’ll learn about nutrients that are like the base of a good cake. They make sure the foundation is robust so that you can then get excited about adding your favourite toppings. These nutrients are introduced through the lens of a food-first approach, so you can always focus on improving the diversity of your diet as opposed to get you body and brain overwhelmed with processed tablets or powders.

  • In Module 4, you’ll also learn to choose from a wide range of specialised supplements based on the science that’s been summarised for you by Dr Miguel. You’ll be provided with tools to decide on which supplements would suit you best, and then assess the effect that these are having on you by tracking your lived experience of taking them with an exclusive tool.

  • Module 4 expands on what you learned about the gut-brain axis in module 3, providing you with extensive details on a range of gut-focused supplements and foods that nourish the connection between the gastrointestinal system and the brain. You’ll learn about their benefits so you can make an informed decision on which of these foods are best for you.

Module 5

In this module, you’ll learn how to leverage the power of exercise to transform your daily ADHD management strategies, offering you a natural way to enhance your cognitive functions and emotional balance.

  • Module 5 integrates empathy with science and spirituality, recognising that the journey with ADHD is not only about managing symptoms but also about nurturing the soul. It's a compassionate acknowledgement of the struggle and an embrace of the unique perspectives and insights that come from living with ADHD.

Module 6

  • Module 6 delves into the fascinating convergence of neuroscience and positive psychology, illuminating how our brain's wiring can be reshaped for happiness and well-being. This module offers insights into how understanding the brain's plasticity can empower ADHDers to cultivate positive emotions, resilience, and a fulfilling life, turning scientific knowledge into actionable strategies for personal growth.

  • Explore the neurological foundations of self-acceptance in this transformative module. It reveals how ADHD affects our self-perception and how we can leverage neuroplasticity to foster self-love. Through practical exercises and mindfulness techniques, ADHDers will learn to navigate the pathways of self-acceptance, building a stronger, more compassionate relationship with themselves and enhancing their overall wellbeing.
